http://www.benq.com/products/LCD/?product=997%26page=features ^^ looks pretty good to me, what do you guys think?I%26#39;m thinking about getting it for my pc and ps3 Is this a good Monitor?

ive never seen a design like that, looks expensive, what does it have that others dont have?
It says ''16ms( 6ms GTG) / 12ms (MPRT)''That absolutely horrible for gaming. You will notice lots of ghosting, especially because it is so big. Get one that is at least 5ms (not gtg)
1920x1200... thats good res. however its only 12 ms. id recommend about a max of 8ms for gaming. but for just average things, its great.

I%26#39;d get a dell. It%26#39;s contrast ratio is the same 1000:1 and its the saem res/size. You can still hook up your ps3 to it, but though component instead of hdmi.http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us%26l=en%26s=dhs%26cs=19%26sku=320-4335

• New build: Best way to flash BIOS before installing OS?

I%26#39;m going to be putting together a new machine in a couple weeks. I%26#39;m going to be getting an Asus P5B-E with an E6600, SATA HDD, SATA DVD-RW, 2GB DDR800, and probably a 7900GS (still considering an 8800GTS).   I%26#39;ll be installing XP on the clean WD Caviar 160GB SATA drive.  I%26#39;d like to update the BIOS before starting the XP install, thats a good idea, right?  Should I get a floppy drive and connect it using the IDE drive just for doing the BIOS flash? Is it possible to use a USB drive or Asus tool that doesn%26#39;t need an OS?I can post the exact specs if necessary. I%26#39;ve been molding the perfect wish list on newegg.  New build: Best way to flash BIOS before installing OS?
You can use a USB key if your mobo supports booting from USB keys. You need to make your USB key bootable though, which is somewhat involved.New build: Best way to flash BIOS before installing OS?
Ok, so it sounds like getting the update onto a floppy disc would be easiest.  Does it pretty much involve getting the file onto a floppy disc and making the floppy drive 1st in the boot order and it executes appropriately?
I can think of three solutions:Many newer motherboards have a bios flasher integrated. That is, when you start the computer, there is a prompt that tell you something like ''press F2'' to go to flash utility. So you only need to provide the bios image file. Sometimes theses utilities support usb flash drives or cd-rom drives, else a floppy disk will work. Look at you motherboard manual to know if you can do this. Other than that, you can burn a DOS boot cd. When you have booted the cd, just execute the flash utility thatyou put on another part of the cd, another cd or even a floppy disk together with the bios image. You can also use a DOS boot floppy if your computer still has one.
Cool, thanks for the help.

G.P.U help

I am building a gaming PC and am having some trouble figuring out which G.P.U to use I was wondering if I should just go out and buy a DX10 card like the evga geforce 8800gts or get a DX9 card like a 7900gs or an X1950PRO. I am wondering how long I could go with one of those DX9 cards before having to upgrade to a better DX10 card and If i get a DX9 card should I get XP or vista?G.P.U help
Also I should probaly mention that I am gonna want to run games on med/high setting at pretty high FPS I will probaly be using an old CRT monitor at 1280x1024 also.
G.P.U help
if you have the money get the 320mb 8800GTS
Depends on what games you want to play. Right off the bat I%26#39;d say get the DX10 card over the DX9 card. But if you aren%26#39;t concered about playing some of the newer games in DX10 then no need to bother with a DX10 card. Although price wise you can probable get a good DX10 card for roughly the same amount of money as a comparable DX9 card. And then it%26#39;s just a question of why not?Vista requires a DX9 card so if you want Vista no need to not get it, regardless of which GPU you end up getting.

couple questions about regarding this memory

I found this memory from Geil. My first question is, how do you guys think it will do for OCing?Second, If I built a PC with a motherbaord that has a P965 express chipset, would it be compatible? I ask this because it is using 1.9V, and is 4-4-4 timing, and the notice on every single motherboard sporting the P965 express chipset says it only supports DDR2800 with 1.8V, and 5-5-5, or 6-6-6 timingscouple questions about regarding this memory
anyone?couple questions about regarding this memory
OC%26#39;d RAM is overrated and rarely worth it. Money%26#39;s better spent on more RAM, better CPU, or better GPU. And if your mobo only supports limited voltages and memory timing why bother with RAM to overclock it? But otherwise from the comments on Newegg it looks like it OC%26#39;s nicely. And if you really want this RAM best get a mobo that supports it and has good support for RAM OC%26#39;ing.

There aren%26#39;t too many motherboards out there that only support those settings - those might be all the motherboard will recognize without going into your BIOS, but I can%26#39;t think of any P965 retail boards that don%26#39;t allow you to tweak/overclock your RAM to run DDR2 800 RAM @ 4-4-4-12 w/ 1.9v if that%26#39;s what they%26#39;re specified to be able to. You may have to go into your BIOS to get those settings, but since you%26#39;re thinking about overclocking anyway, that shouldn%26#39;t be a problem for you.

Quick Monitor Question.

I know this may be a stupid question, but Im a little confused.  Currently I have a pretty crappy dell Monitor that has a max resolution of 1280*1024@60Hz.  My GPU is a 7950GT and I was wondering that if I got a better monitor that could run  1280*1024@85Hz, would I see any improvement in FPS playing games?  The reason I ask is because I heard that a crappy monitor can bottleneck a good GPU.  Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.Quick Monitor Question.
if you have 2 monitors, both on the same resolution, with the same video card, it wont increase the fps. if you get a better monitor that can run 1600x1200, your vid card can handle it, and the game will look better, but generally the lower the resolution the better the fps. but why have such a good video card and only run games on a low resolution? if you upgrade a monitor, get something nice, not just the same thing but newer. keeping the same monitor and lowering the resolution would increase fps, or keeping the same resolution and getting a better vid card would increase fps, or lowering other settings. hope that helps, the vid card still has to load the same amount of pixelsQuick Monitor Question.
Thank you for the help.  The reason Im a little concerned is because people claimed to be getting great FPS in games like  oblivion at 1280*1024 with the GPU I currently have, while I seem to be getting poor FPS at that res.  I thought it would be the crappy monitor bottlenecking the powerful card.  Nothing else in my system is poor performance wise except the monitor.
well if someone has the exact same processor, ram, motherboard, amount of processes running in the backround, same video card, and resolution, as you and getting a better fps than you, then it might be they have lower settings on, such as something like antialiasing or v sync or textures lower than you. or they might have the same settings as you, but better processor or more ram, or less stuff running in the backround

• why is the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 so much money?

i was just wondering why its soooo much money for a dual core cpu?  and do you think since it is only a dual core we might see a price drop anytime soon?why is the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 so much money?
Only thing is the high clock speed (easily achievable with other cpus by oc%26#39;ing) and the unlocked multiplier.why is the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 so much money?
its because its such a monster, i would expect price drop wen AMD release there stuff.
Core 2 duo have two cores. The X6800 I believe is Blomsfield, 4 cores clocked extremely fast, 8mb cache, and is not two c2d stapled together.
My bad, the quad core is Q6600. The x6800 is the fastest c2d.
that also why the X6800 is more expensive probably because of its clock speed.
that also why the X6800 is more expensive probably because of its clock speed.
Because it is an EE, meaning the highest binned chips with an unlocked multiplier.
would you get this over the qx6700 becuase nothing really supports 4 cores right now?

Low Performance in Nvidia Demos !?

so does anyone have an idea . if these are the resullts that I am getting from those demos , then imagine my gaming performance :(

Heres a pci fan that helps cool down the gfx cardhttp://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=120565%26CatId=804This thing on almost lowest setting will give you a 5c or close to 12f drop in temp And on medium setting its like 10c drop and max idk but this is the easiest way to cool down the gfx card. Ive never seen my GPU Temp get pass 65c/149f when I overclocked. But remember you got to have at least a pci slot open  on top and bottom of the pci fan so you dont choke the fans.

Bottlenecking SLI 7900GTs???

Hey, I was thinking about getting a second 7900GT to run in SLI with my current one sometime down the road, but I was wondering if my processor would bottleneck them. It%26#39;s an X2 4200+ overclocked to 2.3GHz (speed of the 4400+). So, is it worth getting the second 7900GT to run in SLI, or would it be hindered by my processor? Thanks. Full specs in sig. Bottlenecking SLI 7900GTs???
SLI is terrible. Me and my friends buy sli motherboards for bonfires and pooper scoopers. The performance gains aren%26#39;t enough to justify cost, and one good card outperforms two decent ones.Bottlenecking SLI 7900GTs???

To the OP, I would save the money and get a 8800 series card myself.
Nope, it won%26#39;t bottleneck, but a single 8800GTS will easily outperform dual 7900GTs. Heck, the factory overclocked 640MB versions of the 8800GTS can usually outperform dual 7900GTXs.Saving your money %26#39;till you can get an 8800GTS would be a much better decision, IMHO.

Can I use this hard drive?

I currently have some really crappy 60 gig hard drive.  My friend is selling me a sata 7200 rpm 250 gig hard drive for 50 bucks, but my motherboard is old so i%26#39;m not sure if i can use it. http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1%26model=6That%26#39;s the link to my motherboard. Can I use this hard drive?
nice to know more bout the hdd too and it also depends on power supply box too, gotta have the sata connectors, cuz ide and sata connect differently to the power supply Can I use this hard drive?
I%26#39;m pretty sure I have sata connectors, I%26#39;m just wondering if my motherboard will allow me to use this hard drive because right now I%26#39;m using an ide hard drive.
it has two sata 150 connectors and you can get cable adapters for the psu.
If you have sata connectorson your motherboard and have sata power connectors on your psu, then they can work side by side.

You guys can keep talking about weird company names, but I think I might buy the XFX version. It comes with GRAW and is overclocked. It is only $310... it all depends when I buy it and how much I spend.

• Internet problems: Please help.

For some reason my internet will just randomly stop working for no reason. When I troubleshoot it of off MSN everything checks fine except DNS and another one, but I forgot what it was:(. After it was done troubleshooting it told me that my proxy could not connect properly to my IP...or something like that. To fix it I just unplugged my router and plugged it back in, but I%26#39;m afraid that it might happen again at any time. Any possible fixes? ThanksInternet problems: Please help.

power cycling your router is the main fix for this.
try switching to older drivers, thats worked for me before
I had the same freaking probleme with a router... I had no clue why i was geting disconnected while download and being on MSN.I just changed and got a better route. Now everything is working fine.I know it has something to do with ports, some routers have problemes opening alot of ports at the same time.

nothing to worry about really. could be your provider is doing some maintenence check their website see if your area is getting work done, that could explain it. could be a dying modem or cord, if theyre old. could be spyware too. never know haha

New Rig Issue

I just built a new system with a nForce 680i SLI, Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB Corsair XMS2, and an 8800 GTS 640MB. When I turn on the computer I get to the screen which tells me to press delete for setup. When I press delete on the keyboard, nothing happens. I have tried a couple keyboards now. Is there something I forgot to plug in inside the case?Help appreciated. New Rig Issue
Were any of those keyboards PS/2 or were they all USB?New Rig Issue
Were any of those keyboards PS/2 or were they all USB?
That was my first question as well.
there should be a setting in the BIOS to allow USB keyboards, I%26#39;m guessing it has the ability anyways. I have a 975X Platinum mobo and I had the same problem till I figured this out... Good luck!
Also, I remember I was having some problems with wireless keyboards. They wouldn%26#39;t work while booting up, but they worked when i was in windows.
Both are PS/2, but the wireless keyboard is usb connected into a PS/2 adapter.
Use a regular PS/2 wired keyboard. Boot it up. It should be fine. Then later, change it in the bios to USB and switch keyboards.
hmmm I just booted it and it worked, so I did my BIOS settings, then reset to install vista, but the keyboard stopped working again. What does one beep indicate when booting up?
hmmm I just booted it and it worked, so I did my BIOS settings, then reset to install vista, but the keyboard stopped working again. If I had to take a guess right now, I%26#39;d say there%26#39;s a chance that your motherboard%26#39;s PS/2 connector isn%26#39;t properly soldered to the board or some such.
make sure everything is plugged in, then flip the cmos, that sometimes works. sometimes it sticks on that screen if you have a bad hdd, did that to me last week.  cmos usually fixes a lot of problems like that unless its just a bad keyboard, but you said you tried several right

• Dell GX270

HiSomeone has asked me to either upgrade his current Dell Optiplex GX270 or to completely build him a new computer. Is it possible to give this computer a good upgrade. He uses it to surf the net and plays games such as Sim City 4. He is a historian and uses it to look up stuff there aswell> Can you please recommend? Also, what would I look for in RAM apart from capacity? Is it true that PC3 RAM is comming out this year and you can get PC3 12500 RAM?Dell GX270
Can anyone help?Dell GX270
PC3 RAm is comming but I don%26#39;t know the speeds.I think he should build a new computer.Bcoz the CPU is Pentium 4 (I think CPU is PGA 478), I think no PCI-Express slot, Not DDR2.These day they were old.(DDR, AGP 8x, SATA 150, PGA 478)
Here are the specs on the computer:http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx270/en/ug/specs.htm  As you can see the video card slot is only a AGP 3.0 and the power supply about 210w.  I would suggest that you build a new system, there%26#39;s not much to work with here. IMO.
Ok, thanks for the help.

question about upgrading our hard drive

hi i just got a new laptop and it has an 80 gig 7200 RPM hard drive, i thought this would be enough because i have an external to hold all my misc. crap..... however after getting it i have found that after vista is installed and all the programs and stuff i only have about 48 gigabytes to work with... i highly doubt this is going to be enough so i want to upgrade... im wondering though... if i backup all my stuff onto another hard drive and then switch them will it be the exact same settings and everything as before the switch? or will i have to do all my settings and everything all over again?question about upgrading our hard drive
youll lose any windows settings and stuff of course.  if youre going to put it back on the new harddrive then youll have to reinstall meaning yes youll lose everything unless you backup like profiles for things like firefox or thunderbird or games, etc.  im not positive, prove me wrong, but i dont think you can just copy and past program files and then put it back on the new hdd and work, i dont think it works like that. i just backup all the exe%26#39;s and my saved profiles for programs and games, so reinstalling windows on a new hdd takes like 5 min to get it where it was after installing windows, drivers, and updatesquestion about upgrading our hard drive

oh cool, ill have to check into that because that seems like exactly what i want, so your saying that putting the ghost drive in would be identical to the one i have now?
Look up Norton Ghost on google, it will do the job, it just copies your hard drive exactly as it is onto another one...
oh cool, ill have to check into that because that seems like exactly what i want, so your saying that putting the ghost drive in would be identical to the one i have now?
yup. its an exact copy of your hard drive. the norton one is pretty good a lot of enterprise orginizations use it.
does norton ghost cost money? and does it save it all to one file that you re-drag and open up and sort of download? how does it work?
does norton ghost cost money? and does it save it all to one file that you re-drag and open up and sort of download? how does it work?
yes it does cost money. what you would do is ghost a hard drive, then you could slave the blank drive and use the norton to copy the image over.
I use Acronis True Image 10 over Norton%26#39;s Ghost altough I have both applicaions. Acronis also makes a program called Migrate Easy which may be all you need to get the job done. Worth a look.

My first thought would be to load the proper drivers...but I%26#39;m somewhat confused by your message.  Are you trying to hook up a 360 to your monitor and use your comp speakers?  I%26#39;m not familiar with the XBOX 360%26#39;s setup or compatabilities.  But usually, if the 360 has a headphone jack on it anywhere, and you%26#39;re using 2.1 comp speakers, you would plug it in there and you shouldn%26#39;t have to load any drivers.  Didn%26#39;t know you could load drivers on a 360 to begin with.  But again, I%26#39;m not sure.

[Question] RAiD 0 or not?

I%26#39;m thinking about setting up a raid-0 configuration with four harddisks. Although I%26#39;m not really sure if it gives me that much more performance. What I do know is that it significantly decreases the reading/writing time. Also I%26#39;m aware about the data loss if only one of the four harddisks crashes. But that isn%26#39;t really a problem for me since I backup my stuff nearly daily to an external source. But now the question is, should I take a raid-0 configuration or not? I%26#39;m planning to install Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit, again) so a format is needed anyway, but does a raid-0 setup improve my gaming and my overall performance? And if I even consider to setup a raid-0 configuration, what type of harddisks should I use? Four 10k RPM harddisks or is 7.2k RPM more then enough? I%26#39;m willing to use four harddisks in the raid-0 configuration so that I atleast have plenty of storage. :)EDIT: *I%26#39;m willing to buy four SATA II harddisks* Here%26#39;s a list of my current system hardware:CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2,13GHz (Soon to be overclocked)GPU: Sparkle Geforce 8800GTX (Soon to be overclocked)RAM: 4GB @ 800MHz in Dual Channel modeMobo: ASUS P5B DeluxeHDD: 1x WD 160GB (7,2k RPM) S-ATA II
[Question] RAiD 0 or not?
If you%26#39;re going to buy 4 HDDs then go for RAID5 or RAID10. At least they offer some data protection. Also, make sure your southbridge is the Intel ICH8R (note the R for RAID) before you buy 4 HDDs....and yes, it would make more sense to buy four 7200 RPM HDDs. EDIT: Just noticed that the board is the P5B DELUXE, so it%26#39;ll definitely have the ICH8R SB. :P I thought the OP just had a P5B. EDIT2: ****ing glicthspot is acting up again.  [Question] RAiD 0 or not?

I%26#39;ve had quite a lot of computers but I never had one that had a failing harddisk or one giving error messages. So I%26#39;m not worried about getting errors in a raid-0 setup. It%26#39;s probably because I know what I%26#39;m doing when I%26#39;m editing something in (for example) the registry. I know fairly everything about Windows XP/Windows Vista and how to tweak these. And I%26#39;m the only one using this computer, so there%26#39;s nothing to worry about I guess. :)But according to several other sources they recommend me to use the ICH8R controller instead of the JMicron one. I read that the JMicron controller is a pretty bad controller, so if this is true I%26#39;ll just use the ICH8R controller. What do you guys say about the JMicron controller?
i%26#39;d listen to the other guys man, by having four disks in raid 0 you have no fault tolerance. if one thing goes bad you are F%26#39;ed.

How do I use 2 Monitors at once?

I just bought a lovely 22 inch Samsung lcd monitor today, its amazing, and i dont get my harddrive back for another week (it%26#39;s being replaced) but i wanted to prepare for when it does so i dont have to ask about this then, ill already be ready for it. im wondering how to set up dual monitors.i have this 22 inch lcd, and a 19 inch crt monitor. is that ok? theres 2 slots on the back of my vid card for monitors, so im guessing the 1st step is to plug both in, but of course the screen will still be on my monitor that ive been using, what do i do then? how do i set up so both monitors are used? how does it work? how do i move one mouse to the next? how do i play a game on one monitor and use aim an internet on another? can both use dvi cords with an adapter to fit on my 1900gt? please give me a detailed step by step way to do this! thanks for the help, im excited to be able to do this.
also, by having dual monitors, is it going to take up move power from my vid card, as in will it work my video card a lot harder than usual or will it not really matter? will it work my cpu harder or anything else? thanks! How do I use 2 Monitors at once?
Here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/hwandprograms/monitors.mspxHow do I use 2 Monitors at once?
If you are using two desktops, then your vid card will be more stressed. If you stretch your desktop over the two monitors, it will not be stressed more.My 7900 GS comes with dual monitor software. It is nvidia however, i dunno how a ati works over 2 monitors though.
ok a couple of more questions now that i know how to set it up. if i select expand window or whatever, itll have like 1 desktop over 2 monitors and when you maximize a window itll take up the whole screen of the monitor your mouse is in right? that way aim and email or internet can be in one monitor and a game can be the other right? that way a game isnt on both monitors or half on 1 monitor and half on the other right? also, can you set a button to move from monitor to monitor that way you dont accidently move your mouse to far? thanks for the help

When you expand a window, it generally expands on the monitor that your mouse is on, but some application have little bugs that wll expand them only on the primary monitor. You can also do an extended desktop set up so that when you expand a window it goes over both of the monitors. It%26#39;s a little weird that way but some apps do benefit from that. 2. Yes, you can have a movie playing on one screen and AIM or a browser on the other. Convenience at its best. ;) 3. Playing games on dual monitors isn%26#39;t the best idea unless that game supports dual monitors. The thing is that sometimes the mouse doesn%26#39;t get locked into the one screen so your mouse can go onto the other monitor and you%26#39;re gonna have problems turning in FPS or moving the screen on some RTS games.4. You move from screen to screen by just moving your mouse past the first screen. You%26#39;ll see what I mean when you set it up. I don%26#39;t know if your dual-monitor software is a little more feature-rich than the one I have but I don%26#39;t get that option so I don%26#39;t know about that. Maybe you can find some third-party software.
i would never have a game on more than one monitor, so as long as i do that, my video card wont work any harder?thanks for your help, and how likely will my mouse roll over to the other by accident when playing a game?

Well, the title does make sense, as ATi are now a division of AMD.

Intel is better as it runs considerably coolerIntel is better as it runs significantly fasterIntel has more bang for the buckIntel has a higher roof of overclockingIntel is about to switch to 45nm chips and also will have a double quad with 8 coresNvidia has better driver support (so ive heard)its really a question of which ice cream flavor do you like.....video cards a preference but nvidia has the lead atm...as far as ati is concerned, there is news that the x2900 is performing underpar but there is no efficient data to back up that claim
im not a fanboy of anything, i just go for the best, i think the reason why Nvidia have more fans it because nvidia have moe options of GPU imo, they tend to have products for the non Pc gamer would like imo
I think neither of them remain constantly the best, Currently however I have noticed that all the support forum I go to are jam packed and overflowing with geforce 8 complaints. I was thinking of getting a 8800 but after reading some complaints i might wait for ati.

(Not just my problems, only really had one, but friends/family/colleges problems that I had to solve.) Plus, they ramp up the price of a product that shouldn%26#39;t be so expensive.

Yes, why not?can a 8800gts fit in this coolermasters case
While the new GPU's are a bit larger, they still fit a regular ATX case perfectly, so you won't have any trouble fitting it in that case.
i had a friend who bought one and it didnt fit in his mid-atx case. he had to get a full. so just be careful
If your harddrive(s) sticks out where the vga card is supposed to be, it may not be able to fit in there.

I had to place my harddrive at a different spot.
If your harddrive(s) sticks out where the vga card is supposed to be, it may not be able to fit in there. I just got all my parts to build my new rig and man is the 640MB 8800GTS one huge card, and I mean HUGE. Yes it will fit in that case. I have to wait on my tower. I got it yesterday and had to send it back because the front was almost busted all the way off. I can%26#39;t wait to get this thing put together. Wait until you see how big the card is.

Then it's not going to be a problem. If the GPU and HDD are just at the same height, they propably won't fit in the case next to each other, since both the hardware and the power plugs will take up too much room. Just making some room by putting the HDD one place lower or higher solves this.
ok thanks

Computer Upgrade

I need help in deciding a computer upgrade because I have only two options. My Current Specs
• A64 3200+ Winchester Core
• Gigabyte K8n Ultra Sli Motherboard
• XFX 7800GT
• Kingston 512*4 DDR 400MHZ RAM
The two options
1. Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Kingston 512MB*4 DDR2 667MHZ RAM and Intel 965 Motherboard
2. XFX 8800GTS 320MB
I can only afford one of the above choices and I am a PC gamer so what would be better for the next 6 months. Computer Upgrade
Why not opt for 2 x 1GB sticks?Computer Upgrade
I can go for that as well but first i need to know which option is better =( its a tough decision.
You%26#39;d be better getting your cpu, ram, and mobo, and then getting a gpu...since there is no dx 10 games out there, there is no rush, and ATI 2900 series (and probably nvidia dx 10 2nd generation) will probably ship cards by the time your piggy bank fills up ;)
I agree, get the CPU, mobo, and RAM now. That 7800GT will last you until some DX10 games are actually out, and the prices on those GPUs will be cheaper.
I%26#39;mma have to go w/the CPU, ram, and mobo option as well ;)
I have an xbox 360 as well. and about the processor i heard that AMD is releasing its next version of CPUs. Computer Upgrade are soo damn hectic !!!
Yep, there%26#39;s always going to be something better right around the corner. You could end up waiting forever and never feel confident with what you buy.  Best advice is to do you research and spend your money wisely.  Whatever you get isn%26#39;t going to be obsolete tomorrow.  Maybe the day after though :)
i would do the 1st option, first of all those parts have been out for a while so they are at such a great price right now. the 8800 is still new and expensive and there are no games that even need a card like that yet. so do option 1 now, and maybe in 6 months to a year get a nice direct x 10 card, theyll be so cheap when ati%26#39;s comes out
okay then ill get the proc upgrade and tell me is nvidia 650i better than intel 965 ? if yes by how much ?

New PC - Need Parts Advice

I am planning to build a new PC and have some of the basics picked out.CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.13GHZ 1066FSB 4MB Retail RAM - Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-5400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC5400 DDR2-667 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory  I am planning to run at mild overclock to 2.66GHz CPU clock - 1334FSB (sync to 667RAM) For now, I will just use my existing Radeon X1900AIW card.Looking for a good, but inexpensive mobo that will support up to PC6400/DDR800... was thinking maybe Asus P5B???Also, can I run with 4x1GB RAM - and have all the memory recognized by Windows XP (32 bit)? Thanks for any help!New PC - Need Parts Advice
no to the windows xp recongnizing 4gb of ram, you need 64-bit. i prefer the asus p5b motherboards they are good but others will suggest better overclockers. but for a mild overclock asus will defiinitly be a good choice New PC - Need Parts Advice
Asus is a solid choice.  P5B Deluxe would definitely not dissapoint. If you didn%26#39;t need something that fancy, you could look at the P5B-E.  That%26#39;s what I%26#39;ll be purchasing next month.
Yep the P5B-E is a really nice board.  And it%26#39;s just a little over 100 bucks so it%26#39;s great in the value department too.
The P5B-E costs about $40 (Canadian) more than the P5B.  Looks like the only difference is 7 SATA instead of 5, RAID support and Firewire.  I%26#39;m not planning to use RAID, won%26#39;t need more than 5SATA devices and have firewire on my Audigy card... If overclocking capabilities and stability are comparable, I think I%26#39;m better off with the P5B.Is the stock HSF good enough for an OC to 2.66GHz?
The stock HSF should be fine as long as you don%26#39;t need to raise the voltage to get it to 2.66.  And as far as the P5B vs the P5B-E, the P5B-E has a little better OC potention iirc.
Yes asus P5B deluxe is very good but you can also try an gigabyte 965P-DS4

• fix my USB! (please)

hii am gettin really somethinged off with my computer, because everytime i plug my mp3 player into a usb slot, it restarts then windows wont open until i unplug it again. this also happens when my bro plugs in his phone, and i bought a usb  mouse, which didn%26#39;t cause it to restart straight away but did crash later on while playing BF2142. strangely it doesnt restart with the printer plugged in :S. iv already tried uninstalling the ports in device manager but that did nothing. any ideas what could be the problem? fix my USB! dodgy drivers? try reinstalling themfix my USB! (please)
Before we can get started with helping you fix your USB problem there is some additional information we will need first.
• Do you get an error message when the device is connected to your PC? If so, what is it (the more specific the better)?
• What operating system are you using (If using Windows 2K or XP please include the service pack information)?
• What Brand and model of Motherboard are you using?
• What Brand/Model of MP3 player, phone, mouse are you using?
• Have you checked for updated Chipset drivers for you Motherboard?
• Have you checked with the Manufacturer of your Motherboard/OS/USB devices to see if there are any known compatability issues?
Hope that helps. If not post the information requested above here in this thread and we will see what we can do to get ya fixed up.-D_J

Power Supply calculator

I found a web page that looks like it does a fairly complete job of calculating your power supply needs that%26#39;s worth checking out - http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine.I got there through Antec%26#39;s web site in case you can%26#39;t access the page directly. Power Supply calculator
yep i had that bookmarked when i first ran into it... it really is great, and can pretty much prove that even the most hungriest of setups don%26#39;t need those rediculous 1000watter psus.....Power Supply calculator
most people will be suprised when they calculate their power, most people go out and get 600 and 700 watt psu%26#39;s and ive even seen people buy 1000watts psu%26#39;s bc they claim they plan on upgrading to sli one day. haha. most people use about 300 watts of power at any given time, and those with the newest cards and processors out probably use closer to 400, and those with sli around 450. like i said, most people will be suprised. my rig uses 319
i was paranoid with 450 watt ps with all the threads on this forum. that calculator suggested 380, so I think I'm ok :)

advice for new comp?

im plannin on gettin a new comp in a few weeks time from www.pcoption.co.uk, i was wondering what u guys thought of the specsE66002 gigs 800 mhz ram320 gb 7200 rpm hdCoolermaster igreen 600w sli psuasus 8800gts 320mbmsi p6n sli-fi motherboardwin xp would that motherboard support pernyn or whatever that new core thats gonna come out later calledalso was considerin vista for dx10 but heard too many bad things as well as rumours of a new os called vienna, has the situation on vista improved at all?im not sure what to do about monitor i could get a 17 inch monitor and the whole thing wouldd cost me around 800 quid (1600 dollars) or i could get a samsung 226bw 22 inch which is hdcp compliant for a total of around 1000 quid (2000 dollars), if i brought the 22 inch would the 8800gts 320 meg version b ok for a native res of 1680 x 1050 altho tbh im used to gaming at 800 x 600 so these big res%26#39;s seem like overkill to me, is the hdcp compliant thing worth it? i wud like to b able to get a hd drive once the format war is over and if i brought the 22 inch i wouldnt have ne plans for another monitor in the forseeable futureadvice for new comp?
nope... looks like the penyrn%26#39;s will be using lower voltages so you%26#39;d need a voltage regulator-down for that. as for vienna, no word, M$ is slowly but surely fixing out all the kinks in vista, sp1 looks to be out by Novemberish.... but its more to do with nvidia dropping the ball with the drivers though. get the 22in monitor, its not overkill, its perfect for the card, playing at 800x600 really is a waste on that card.advice for new comp?
^ exactly
voltage regulator? whats that? what wud i need for a compatible system/mobo? so is vista a negative for gamers? cuz i was plannin on gettin vista once they got the bugs fixed but since im gonna purchase xp with this comp i might as well get it? i have a copy of xp at home i cud dual boot altho with one hd not sure how to do that, altho id prefer to just have vista from the start if there arent too many problems, whats the situation with the nvidia drivers? is it totally unplayable in vista?
seems liek a good rig, get the 22 inch one, lol 800*600, dont worry i doubt you%26#39;ll ever thave to use res ever again on the GTS.
voltage regulator? whats that? what wud i need for a compatible system/mobo? so is vista a negative for gamers? cuz i was plannin on gettin vista once they got the bugs fixed but since im gonna purchase xp with this comp i might as well get it? i have a copy of xp at home i cud dual boot altho with one hd not sure how to do that, altho id prefer to just have vista from the start if there arent too many problems, whats the situation with the nvidia drivers? is it totally unplayable in vista?
the voltage regulator regulates the voltage coming in to your chip, and when you compare say the core 2 duo vs penyrn, the penyrn should require less voltage, so if you pop it in a core 2 duo mobo, it might not work since it works with the higher voltages. You might want to look at the Intel P35 board if you are really interested in penyrn and DDR3 tech, though DDR3 is exhorbitantly expensive, especially in the first few months of its release. vista is playable, you usually will get a few frames less than on xp, don%26#39;t count much on sli performance though. dual booting is a snap... just make sure you have a program like PartitionMagic, or better yet, two hard drives, but if going the single drive route, just partition a portion of the hdd for vista, and once you%26#39;ve installed xp, pop in the vista disc and go for a clean install into the partition. I%26#39;d hit up dual booting the system, especially since you have a good-sized hdd for it.
if i dual booted, what size partitions shud i make? also if i loaded up xp wud i still b able to play ne games installed in the vista partition? seein as im gettin it custom built vista might be pre-installed does that matter? cud i install xp second or wud i have to wipe vista first? also wud i b able to upgrade to the quad cores instead of the pernyns with that mobo later?
well it depends on which one you%26#39;d want to put most of your apps in, so if vista, allocate more gigs to it, and vice versa, its really arbitrary so you can make that call. I think you need to make a shortcut of the program between os%26#39;s to cross-run that program. well i checked on the egg, there%26#39;s no quad support apparently.....
i suppose i%26#39;d want more space for vista but use xp till vista is sorted however long that may be, vista seems like a lot of hassle, do u think its worth it for the dx10? or i cud just uninstall vista once i get it, install xp and upgrade laterDo u think it wud b better to get vista with the new system or xp2 considerin that my home version of xp is a haxed one?
easy on the discussion of haxed xp disks, but do what jfelisario  said,  do a partition. I would just cut your drive in half, allocate half to vista, half to xp. Is dx10 wirth the hassle of vista, idk man, I mean only a handful of games coming out support it, drivers are messed up, who knows. IMO, you have a kick ass system there, just install xp, and forget vista. if your custom pc comes with it pre-installed, then request if you can have a hard copy of it. Or tell the builders to create the partitions for you...
