I know this is the PC Hardware Discussion section, but I am pretty positive I could get the answers I need on here. I put together my computer and installed Windows XP Professional. Unforntunately, some drivers for my motherboard require Service Pack 1 and since the XP disc is pretty old it does not have the needed files. I went ahead and purchased a Windows XP Home disc that comes with Service Pack 2. So here is my problem: I want to format my hard drive and I have no floppy disc drive and I do not know how to do this. I was running Windows 98 on my old computer so I am pretty oblivious to XP.Thanks for any help; it%26#39;ll be great to play some games again! Help with formatting
I thought you could download service packs for free from Microsoft%26#39;s website? Lol... Well, all you have to do is boot from the Windows XP cd. It has a built in formater that%26#39;s really easy to use. Help with formatting
I thought you could download service packs for free from Microsoft%26#39;s website? Lol...
Oh, I should have mentioned I run my internet through ethernet and I need SP1 to install the drivers, so I am unable to get online.I will try to put in the CD again, I probably missed where it lets me format. Thanks, and I guess sorry for the stupid question.
I understand. If it doesn%26#39;t go into the WinXP set up it%26#39;s probably because your hard drive is ahead of the cd drive in the boot order. Go into your BIOS and put your CD drive first. If you don%26#39;t know how to get into the BIOS you can find your manual and look it up, or sometimes the manufacturer dispays the key when the pc is booting up. Or you can Try F2, Delete, Enter, Esc, and the shift key. If that doesn%26#39;t work just do what I do.. jam on the keys as the pc boots up. ;) That never fails.
Do you have a DSL modem? cuz Im pretty sure that they have USB cables as well as ethernet cables. So, you can go onto the internet without needing the Ethernet controllersSecond, in the boot device priority, set it to the CD drive, and insert the WinXP disk inside the CD-ROM drive. you should be able to format your hard drive from there
why dont you just install service pack 2 first, then all windows updates. then install motherrboard drivers by going to the website which should have the newest ones which should work on service pack 2 right, cant imagine they wouldnt
Get into your BIOS. You will need to hit, F8, ESC, DEL or something to that affect. In the bios get to the boot order and put whatever cd or dvd drive you have as the first boot device, Harddrive being second. Now with the cd in, restart the computer. Windows will load drivers and whatnot to format and install itself. Now best thing to do here is delete the current partition/%26#39;s. Create a new partition. Then install windows on that fresh partition. The onscreen menu talks you through the partition deleting and creating. When you create the new partition, just make sure it%26#39;s for the maximum available space, it usually defaults maximum size though. It%26#39;s very easy, not like other older windows with the boot disks and DOS booting to use the /commands to reformat and partition the HDD.
Another solution is to slipstream SP2 into your Win XP Pro disk.Follow these instructions.
